Allen Zewen Yu (b. 1994, Henan Province, China) is a landscape architect and artist whose work focuses on the relationship between materials, processes, and their surrounding environments. As a professional trained landscape architect, he draws inspiration for his recent series of ceramic works from the interplay of spatial design and traditional ceramic crafts, particularly influenced by East Asian heritage and traditions, combined with his diasporic experiences living in the US.
Allen finds inspiration in natural beauty and the unique textures and shapes it embodies. He explores forms found in fruits, stones, and other natural elements, translating these into clay objects that feature intricate surface textures and glaze combinations. His body of work reflects his perspective as a first-generation Asian immigrant, engaging with the interplay of design and art while navigating his unique personal journey and his own cultural identity.
Through his creations, Allen produces objects that are distinctly Asian in identity, yet they also convey a subtle relationship between purposeful aesthetic design practices and the open-ended interpretations left for viewers.
